ABOUT US

The Rotherham Rep, officially known as Rotherham Amateur Repertory Company Limited, is a prominent dramatic society with a long history in the region. Establised in1926, it presents several plays each season at the Rotherham Civic Theatre. The Civic Theatre, which opened in 1960, was converted from a church and has a strong connection to amateur theatre groups like the Rep, who were instrumental in its early success. 

Celebrating a Centenary of Theatrical Excellence

As The Rotherham Rep approaches its 100th anniversary in 2026, they continue to invest in their future by
innovating and employing new and more sophisticated technical methods to enhance their productions. Last
year’s sell-out performances of “A Christmas Carol” combined traditional sets, video projection, complex sound
and lighting effects, as well as including a live choir on stage. With the support of the Rotherham Civic Theatre,
the group consistently pushes the boundaries of community theatre, aiming to ensure each performance is a
memorable experience for Rep members and audiences alike.

The REP was formed in 1962 by Rotherham Teachers and Members of local businesses and companies.  It has produced a great deal of talent which has included the young girl who played Elizabeth Bennett in the above play (now the REP’s oldest member at 92 who still goes to watch the plays now), a BBC radio presenter and a famous Hollywood actor.

This takes us right through to the talented members which perform today who come from just as many varied backgrounds such as teachers, pharmacists, add others and even sixth formers – so who knows where that may lead!

Civic Theatre

The first’s night production – Pride and Prejudice, performed by ‘Rotherham REP’ opened the Civic Theatre on Monday 7th March 1960.
